Law-Exams: What can I contact the ombudsperson for?

Solution

The faculty ombudspersons have been given the following assignments and duties:

  • Mediate between student and examiner with the aim to prevent or resolve issues; the role as mediator will in the first place be applied to exam situations, including continuous assessment.
  • General educational issues, e.g. the development of the courses, lecturing methods, time schedules, forwarding to the correct people such as the faculty dean, chairman of the education committee, administration offices, study programme counsellor or other service providers, and acting as mediator where needed.
  • Provide information about the exam regulations after having consulted the education department, the legal department and/or the central ombudsperson when in doubt.
  • Forward students with a functional impairment or personal difficulties such as stress, fear of failure, concentration or sleeping problems, etc. to the proper student counselling services.
  • Attend exams after a motivated request from a student or examiner.
Request details about exams, possibly before deliberation by the examination commission in order to safeguard the rights of all parties, but particularly students, taking into consideration their privacy.
  • Take part in the examination commission’s deliberation with an advisory vote in order to safeguard the rights of all parties, but particularly students; which implies that the ombudsperson can intervene during discussions or that (s)he can call for a vote, whether or not confidential.
  • Provide information during an internal appeal before and after deliberation, in order to inform both students and examiners about the procedure; the ombudsperson will give advice to both parties and will try to find a solution to the posed problem, yet will never act in the place of either the students or the examiners.
  • Advise the competent authorities in case of fraud.
  • Depending on the internal organisation of the faculty concerned, be responsible for the registration of students who will not sit their exams and/or intervene with problems that arise with the transfer of examinations due to extenuating circumstances.
